Following today’s Written Statement from the Environment Minister on the Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management Programme for 2021-2022, Cllr Andrew Morgan (Rhondda Cynon Taf), WLGA Environment Spokesperson said:

“Councils and partners are facing unprecedented challenges linked to climate change and major flooding events which continue to impact communities across Wales.

Councils are facing up to this challenge and are working tirelessly to protect families, businesses and communities. The announcement of £19M capital funding to help councils deliver flood alleviation schemes is a statement of this intent.

The WLGA welcomes today’s Ministerial announcement for 2021-22 and the sustained level of revenue support to councils to help them deliver their flood and coastal risk management functions. In the face of increasing risk to communities from climate change, long term certainty over the level of financial support for councils will be required to ensure a sustained response to flood risk and resilience to climate change in Wales in the future.

The WLGA also welcomes the announcement of further funding to the WLGA to provide support to councils, and to the Wales Coastal Monitoring Centre which plays a major role in supporting councils and their partners with a range of data and evidence to inform coastal management approaches in the most at risk communities.”
