In response to Welsh Government’s recent announcement in respect of Supporting People Programme funding arrangements, Councillor Anthony Hunt (Torfaen), WLGA Spokesperson for Finance, said:

“Local government is committed to working with our partners to prevent and tackle homelessness and to support vulnerable people to live independent lives. Figures indicate that rough sleeping and homelessness is rising and even though prevention of homelessness is increasing, getting to grips with these issues and supporting vulnerable people is needed now more than ever. Some of the most vulnerable people in our communities are feeling the effects of austerity and benefit reforms including universal credit, which are making the problem more acute. Housing Cabinet Members at a recent meeting reiterated the importance of tackling homelessness as a key priority but also recognise that the lack of housing or a home is only element of the problems and challenges experienced by homeless people and highlighted the importance of taking a holistic approach of providing advice, support and assistance.”

“The Supporting People Programme is very important to local authorities in their work in this area. We welcome that the Cabinet Secretary is considering extending the flexibilities around this and a number of other funding streams. We believe the objectives and aims of this programme can be better aligned with other related streams of work in order to develop a more joined-up approach to tackling these problems and better supporting vulnerable people. Such freedom gives local government the flexibility to focus on outcomes for people and local authorities will look forward to discussing with Welsh Government and other partners how we can better work together to ensure that those outcomes are realised and maximise the opportunities that this change brings.”
