WLGA has today welcomed the latest Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) rankings, which show a marked improvement in all areas of the Welsh education system.

Co-ordinated and led by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), PISA assesses the knowledge and life skills of pupils aged 15.

Responding to today’s PISA results, Councillor Ian Roberts (Flintshire), WLGA Spokesperson for Education said:

“Today’s PISA results show that the education system in Wales is continuing to improve, thanks to the hard work of students, teachers, support staff and everyone else involved in the education system. Local authorities have worked closely with Welsh Government to implement the newly reformed curriculum, and it is very encouraging to see that Wales’ performance ranks significantly higher than in the 2009 and 2012 PISA rounds.

“I’m pleased that Andreas Schleicher, head of education and skills OECD, has recognised the recent reforms as an important first step in the mission to improve education. Learners deserve the best learning opportunities, and I’m grateful to them for their patience and diligence during a time of transition for the curriculum. It is clear that our collective reforming efforts are paying dividends, and local government remains committed to work with all relevant partners to continue to improve our education system in order to provide learners in Wales with the highest standard of education.”
