WLGA has today congratulated learners receiving their GCSE and Welsh Baccalaureate results in the second year of major reforms for both qualifications

The number of learners who achieved A*-A grades has increased from 17.9% to 18.5% this year, and 61.6% of all learners achieved A*-C grades. A total of 92.8% of all learners achieved the Skills Challenge Certificate, as part of the Welsh Baccalaureate qualification, which is a 5.1 percentage point increase on last year.

For the second year running, the GCSE award is being overhauled by the Welsh Government with sweeping changes being implemented across many subjects, which are reflected in this year’s results and entry patterns. Further analysis will take place in the days to come.

WLGA Spokesperson for Education, Councillor Debbie Wilcox (Newport), said:

“I would like to congratulate all our learners’ hard work and efforts which have led up to today. Being a former teacher, i know that parents, teachers, friends and school staff across Wales all play a key role in our learners’ success and I would like to thank them all for their tireless support.”

“The reforms mean that it is hard to draw any concrete conclusions from this year’s results. We will continue to work with colleagues at all levels of the education system to ensure that qualification reforms are successfully embedded during this extended period of transition.”
