Following today’s announcement by the Minister for Health and Social Services on recovery funding of £40m for social care, Cllr Huw David (Bridgend), WLGA Spokesperson for Health and Social Care said:

“We welcome this additional funding to support recovery of social care services in local authority areas across Wales.

“The pandemic has clearly demonstrated the real value of social care, and its incredibly important role in our communities. Throughout the pandemic social care has been on the frontline and councils have been doing all they can to support those in need of care and support despite the health and social care system experiencing intense pressures over the past eighteen months.

“The knock-on effect from dealing with the pandemic is huge and this additional funding will support local authorities as they continue to look at how they can recover from the pandemic, adopt new ways of working and contribute towards a sustainable health and social care system that can meet the demands of the future.”

“Whilst there is one eye on recovery, we continue to experience increasing and significant pressures and demand on our vital health and social care services, placing many services are close to crisis.

“There has never been a more crucial time to find a long-term solution to how we support all those who draw upon and work in these vital services. The announcement last week by the UK Government on their funding plan for health and social care now provides a significant opportunity for Wales to reform our social care system and help tackle the urgent priorities that are facing us. It is vital that we all – Welsh Government, councils, social care sector, the NHS and those with lived experience – work together to develop a care and support system which is fit for the future.”
