Council leaders have today praised the work of Wales’ council workforce for their formidable contribution in the response to the pandemic.

Speaking at the WLGA’s Annual General Meeting, held virtually, leaders praised the “heroic” contribution of Wales’ council workforce which continues to play an integral role in the fight against Covid.

Councillor Andrew Morgan (Rhondda Cynon Taf), WLGA Leader said:

“Throughout this crisis, councils have been our communities’ first port of call for help and guidance at a deeply challenging time for us all. But that support would not have been possible without the relentlessly hard work of devoted council workers across Wales.

Their work may often be unseen, but their impact simply cannot be ignored. From caring for older people, delivering free school meals to eligible children, supporting shielding people and sheltering the homeless, to delivering urgent financial support to businesses and getting children back to schools, the local government workforce has acted with astounding urgency and pulled out all the stops to ensure that no-one in our communities is left behind.

“My fellow council leaders and I, as elected members and residents in our communities, would like to very sincerely thank every single council worker who is contributing to these efforts. Local government staff are rooted in their communities. They care deeply about making a difference in the lives of residents who have been thrown into darkness by this pandemic, with no end yet in sight. But the key work of our councils’ staff, alongside partners in health and the third sector, continues to provide a light which will help to guide us through.”
