WLGA has today congratulated pupils across Wales for their success this year in A-level and Welsh Baccalaureate exams.

The number of pupils achieving A* – E grades has again increased, following in the established trend of recent years.  There has also been an increase in the number of pupils gaining A* / A in key science subjects including Biology, Physics and Chemistry.

94.0% of candidates achieved the new Skills Challenge Certificate of the Welsh Baccalaureate, with 78.7% of candidates achieving the Advanced Welsh Baccalaureate award. A 3.4% increase in entries for the Advanced Welsh Baccalaureate shows that more pupils recognise the value of this new qualification.

WLGA Spokesperson for Education, Councillor Debbie Wilcox (Newport) said:

“The pupils’ perseverance has today paid off, and I would like to congratulate every one of them on their success and hard work. Results day is always a nerve-wracking occasion for all involved – as a former teacher I’ve spent many a sleepless night before results hoping that my pupils have achieved their best, and I would like to wish every pupil the very best in whatever path they choose to follow.

“We must also remember the invaluable contribution of parents, teachers and school staff in supporting pupils – without whom, today’s results would simply not have been possible. Everyone who’s part of the education system in Wales remains wholeheartedly committed to providing the best opportunities to pupils, and we will continue to work hard at all levels to make sure that our pupils thrive and fulfil their potential.”
