WLGA has today congratulated pupils across Wales for their A-level and Welsh Baccalaureate success.

The number of pupils achieving A*-A has risen to 8.7% of candidates, which is the best outcome since the award was introduced, with the number of pupils achieving A*- A having also increased, following in the established trend of recent years. There has also been a 1 percentage point increase in the number of pupils gaining A*-C grades.

97.7% of candidates achieved the Welsh Baccalaureate Skills Challenge Certificate, which is up 3.7 percentage points from 2017. 80.9% of candidates passed the Advanced Welsh Baccalaureate – an increase of 2.2 percentage points.

WLGA Spokesperson for Education, Councillor Debbie Wilcox (Newport) said:

“As a former teacher, I know first-hand how stressful results day can be for all involved. I would like to congratulate all pupils today on their diligent efforts and hard work, and to wish them all the very best in whichever path they choose to follow.

“And of course, we mustn’t forget the key role of parents, teachers and school staff in encouraging and supporting every pupil to reach their full potential. Everyone who’s part of the education system in Wales at all levels are firmly committed to giving the best opportunities to pupils, and to provide an enriching and supportive environment for them to achieve their potential and develop as individuals.”
